How many pavers do I need for a patio, walkway or driveway?

A useful paver calculator should do more than divide patio area by the face area of one stone. Real paving also has joints, cut pieces, breakage and packaging. Numbivo therefore separates the net paving area, the paver module including the joint, the quantity before waste, the order quantity after waste and whole pallets when you enter a pallet size.

Choose a rectangular area, a circular patio or a known measured area. Subtract planting pockets, drains or other areas that will not be paved. Then enter the actual paver dimensions and joint width. For a regular rectangular paver grid, the calculator estimates the number of modules that fit into the area and rounds up to whole pavers.

Net paving area = gross project area − unpaved area
Paver module area ≈ (paver length + joint) × (paver width + joint)
Pavers to order = round up[pavers before waste × (1 + waste %)]

Where to get the paver, bedding and jointing inputs

Paver size, installed coverage and pallet quantity

Use the product data sheet, pallet label or supplier quote. Check whether the listed dimensions are actual unit dimensions, nominal format or a multi-size laying module. If the manufacturer publishes installed coverage per pack or pallet, use that as the final order check.

Bedding and jointing material

Take the specified layer thickness from the project build-up or installation system, and use the supplier's density or bag coverage where available. Jointing products can have their own permitted joint widths, fill depths and coverage rates, so do not replace product instructions with a generic geometric estimate.

Measure separately: the paver calculator does not choose the structural sub-base, drainage, geotextile or edge-restraint design. Once that build-up is known, calculate the deeper aggregate layer separately.

Pavers per square foot or square metre

Searches such as pavers per square foot, pavers per m² and how many pavers do I need all describe the same core quantity problem. The answer changes with paver size and joint width. A 20 × 10 cm rectangular paver uses far more pieces per square metre than a 40 × 20 cm paver.

The result panel shows the live pavers-per-area value for your dimensions. If a manufacturer publishes an official installed coverage for a proprietary multi-size system, use that product data instead of treating a single rectangular module as exact.

Paver waste for straight, running-bond and herringbone patterns

Waste covers cut pieces, damaged stones, colour sorting and pieces that cannot be reused at another edge. Straight rectangular areas usually waste less than herringbone, diagonal layouts, curved patios or borders with many short cuts.

The pattern selector changes only the suggested allowance. It is not a construction rule. If your supplier, drawing or installer specifies another waste percentage, enter that value directly.

Paver sand calculator: bedding layer volume and mass

The bedding layer is the thin levelling layer directly below the pavers. Depending on the paving system and local terminology, it may be described as bedding sand, grit, screenings or fine aggregate. Enter the compacted/planned depth, an allowance and the density for the material you will actually buy.

Numbivo first calculates the bedding volume, then converts it to mass. Density can vary with aggregate type, grading and moisture, so the editable density is more useful than a hidden universal conversion.

Bedding volume = net paving area × bedding depth × (1 + allowance %)
Bedding mass = bedding volume × material density

Jointing sand calculator from paver size and joint width

Jointing-sand demand depends on the amount of open joint area and the depth that is filled. Small pavers create more joint length than large pavers, while wider joints increase the open volume. The calculator estimates the joint fraction from the paver face area compared with the paver module area.

Enter the intended joint fill depth, density, allowance and bag weight. The result gives an estimated mass and rounds it up to whole bags. Irregular natural stone, chamfered edges, spacer profiles and permeable paving systems can differ from this regular-grid estimate, so use product-specific coverage as the final purchasing check when it is available.

Paver pallet calculator and order rounding

Pavers are often supplied in full packs or pallets. Enter the actual pieces per pallet to see how many whole pallets would cover your calculated order. The main result remains the number of pavers to order; pallet rounding is shown separately so you can distinguish material need from supplier packaging.

Paver cost calculator

Choose whether your paver price is quoted per area, per piece or per pallet. You can also enter bedding material cost per tonne or short ton and jointing-material price per bag. The total is a materials estimate only; excavation, geotextile, sub-base, edge restraints, drainage, delivery, machinery and labour remain separate.

For students and apprentices: paver maths practice

This section is designed for students, vocational learners and construction apprentices who want to practise area, unit conversion, material takeoff, percentage waste and volume calculations. Load the values into the live calculator, work out the answer yourself, then reveal the solution. The same formulas used by the calculator are used in the answer.

Exercise 1: 5 × 4 m patio

A rectangular 20 m² patio uses 20 × 10 cm pavers with 4 mm joints, 7% waste, 300 pavers per pallet and a 4 cm bedding layer.

Exercise 2: herringbone driveway

An 8 × 3 m driveway uses the same 20 × 10 cm paver but a 12% planning allowance for the herringbone layout and a 5 cm bedding layer.

Exercise 3: US walkway

A 20 × 4 ft walkway uses 4 × 8 in pavers, 1/8 in joints, 8% waste and a 1 in bedding layer. Practise square feet, inches, cubic yards and pounds.

Before ordering pavers, bedding sand and jointing material

Confirm actual paver dimensions, pallet quantity and installed coverage with the supplier. Multi-size packs, irregular stone and proprietary laying patterns should be estimated from the manufacturer's layout or coverage data rather than a single rectangular module.

Also treat the bedding layer separately from the structural sub-base. A patio, path and vehicle driveway can require very different excavation depth, aggregate layers, compaction, drainage and edge restraint. For the deeper aggregate layer, continue with the Gravel & Aggregate Calculator using the project-specific depth and density.

FAQ – paver quantity, sand, pallets and cost

How do I calculate how many pavers I need?
Calculate the net paving area, divide it by the area covered by one paver module including the joint, round up to whole pavers, then add a realistic waste allowance for cuts, breakage and pattern losses.
How many pavers do I need per square foot or square metre?
That depends on paver length, width and joint width. The calculator shows pavers per ft² or pavers per m² from the dimensions you enter, so you do not have to rely on a generic table.
Does joint width change the paver count?
Yes. A regular paved surface includes both paver faces and joints. This calculator uses a modular size of paver length plus joint by paver width plus joint, which is useful for rectangular pavers laid in a regular grid.
How much extra should I add for paver waste?
There is no single correct percentage. Straight rectangular areas usually create fewer cuts than herringbone, diagonal, curved or highly detailed layouts. The pattern selector only suggests a planning allowance; you can overwrite it.
Can I use this as a patio paver calculator or driveway paver calculator?
Yes. Use rectangle, circle or known-area mode for patios, paths and driveways. For driveways, also verify paver thickness, sub-base design and compaction requirements separately because quantity alone does not determine structural suitability.
How does the paver pallet calculator work?
Enter how many pavers are supplied on one pallet. The calculator rounds the order quantity up to whole pallets for planning. Product packaging varies, so replace the default with the actual pallet quantity from your supplier.
How much bedding sand or bedding aggregate do I need?
The calculator multiplies net paving area by the selected bedding depth, adds the bedding allowance and converts volume to mass using the density you enter. Use the actual density or supplier conversion for the chosen sand or bedding aggregate when available.
How is jointing sand estimated?
The calculator estimates the fraction of the paved area occupied by joints from paver size and joint width, multiplies it by the chosen joint fill depth, applies an allowance and converts the volume to mass using an editable density.
Does this calculator include the gravel sub-base?
It estimates the pavers, bedding layer and jointing material. For a deeper crushed-stone or gravel sub-base, use the Gravel & Aggregate Calculator because sub-base depth and density are a separate design choice.
Can the calculator estimate paver cost?
Yes. Enter a paver price per area, per piece or per pallet, plus optional bedding price per tonne or short ton and jointing-material price per bag. Labour, excavation, drainage, edging, delivery and equipment are not included.
Should I use actual paver dimensions or nominal product size?
Use the dimensions or installed coverage stated for the actual product. Nominal names can differ from manufactured dimensions, and multi-size systems are better estimated from manufacturer coverage data than from one rectangular module.
Why can full-pallet purchasing give me more pavers than the calculated order?
The waste allowance and pallet rounding are separate. Waste increases the planned material quantity; pallet rounding can add another surplus because suppliers may sell only whole pallets or packs. The calculator shows both quantities separately.
Is the jointing-sand result exact for polymeric or permeable-joint products?
No. The geometric joint-volume estimate is a planning check for a regular rectangular grid. Bag coverage depends on paver shape, joint width, joint depth, compaction and product formulation, so manufacturer coverage should be the final purchasing check.
Can students use the paver calculator to learn the formulas?
Yes. The student and apprentice section includes worked practice scenarios for area, paver modules, waste, pallet rounding, bedding volume and jointing material. Each exercise can be loaded into the live calculator.
